ABOUT THE FOUNDER
SHRI MADHAVRAO GANGADHARAO CHITNAVIS

Established the Gorakshan Sabha in the year 1888 – A strong need for establishment of a Gorakshan Sabha was felt because of ‘Gau Hatya’ (Killing of cows). To protect and preserve the sanctity of the Hindu religion a joint effort was made by all intellectuals to establish the Gorakshan Sabha. It established 38 centres in the Central Province region and 9 centres in the Varhad region.

Establishment of Bhonsala Deosthan Committee in the year 1866 – Shri Madhavrao Gangadharrao Chitnavis played an important role in the committee established for the maintenance and protection of the temple.

Establishment of Vyayamshala, Kridangan, Swastik Sansthan, and Scouts – To imbibe a habit of exercise and discipline amongst youth and also to inculcate a sense of social work in them, Shri Madhavrao Gangadharrao Chitnavis established the Vyayamshala, Kridangan and Swastik Sansthan. This vyayamshala – also called the Indian Gymkhana, was started in February 1923.

 President of Central Provinces Red Cross Society- From the year 1922, Shri Madhavrao Gangadharrao Chitnavis was President of the Central Provinces Red Cross Society. In collaboration with NMC he started a health week to create health awareness amongst people. He raised funds to create awareness about Leprosy and Cancer by organizing film shows on the subjects.

Service to plague-affected people – There was an outbreak of plague in the year 1898 which the Nagpur region had never experienced before. Shri Madhavrao Gangadharrao Chitnavis created an awareness about the epidemic, and made several efforts to stop the spread of the disease.

Service to drought affected people – Shri Madhavrao Gangadharrao Chitnavis was a member of the Imperial Council for 4 years, and during the drought period he brought to the government’s attention the problems faced by the people of the region. With the help of the Lok Sabha and the Malgujari Sabha, he took the initiative to compensate and to provide employment to drought-affected people by creating a relief fund of Rs 1 crore through collections.

Donations by way of Will – Through a will dated 1926, Shri Madhavrao Gangadharrao Chitnavis donated huge amounts to different organisations in Nagpur viz: the Mure Memorial Hospital, Dafrin Memorial Fund, Hislop College, Sule High School and University and Prabhu Education Trust Fund, Thane.
