Social Projects undertaken by the trust in past

1.Paediatric Advance Life Support Course

Paediatric Advance Life Support Course is a two-day workshop cum seminar in which basic life saving skills like cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, fluid management etc. are taught to participants through interactive lectures and hands on skills on life size manikins.  In these workshops, emphasis is on saving life with minimum equipment not only in hospitals but also in scenarios like accidents or heart attacks at home etc. 

The skills imparted during the workshop include:

Emergency Intubations & Airway Management,

Rapid Cardiopulmonary Assessment.

Rhythm disturbances, cardiac rhythms and ECGs

Emergency vascular access,

Basic Life Support,

Resuscitation of the newborn outside the delivery room.

The course has certification by Indian Academy of Paediatrics and the standards of American Heart Association have been adapted. Two workshops have been conducted so far.

2.Neonatal Advance Life Support Workshops:

Neonatal Advance Life Support workshop was designed as per the guidelines of National Neonatology Forum and American Paediatric Association. A team of doctors from MGIMS, Sevagram, conducted the workshop. A total of 42 participants from Jabalpur, Yavatmal, Sawangi-Meghe, Amravati and Nagpur participated in the workshop.

The skills imparted during the workshop included Emergency Intubations and Airway Management, Rapid Cardiopulmonary Assessment, Basic Life Support, Resuscitation of the New Born within/outside the delivery room, etc.

3.Medical Research Fellowships   

Late Madhavrao Chitnavis Clinical Research Fellowship Fund was been set up in 1999 to award fellowships in Medical Research. Five fellowships have been awarded so far. Proposals were invited from medical professionals and judged by a panel of experts. The Trust has also set up an Independent Ethics Committee to examine the proposals received and any such proposals received from various researchers. 

Fellowships awarded:

2001-2002 Dr. N.V.Deshpande for the research titled, “Role of Inflammatory Markers in Acute coronary Syndromes and their modification using Rubia Cardifolia (Manjistha).”

2002-2003 Dr. Mehroo Kamal for the study titled, “Visual inspection of uterine cervix after application of acetic acid: an alternative to cytological screening for pre-cancer and cancer cervix”.

2003-2004 Jointly awarded to Dr. M.V.Kailikar for the research titled, “Study of immunomodulatory effect of tenospora cardiofolia extract in HIV positive Patients” and to Dr.Leena Dhande for the research titled “Effect of food cooked in iron utensils on iron status in children with iron deficiency anaemia”. 

2004-2005 Dr. Rahul Narang for the research titled, “Characterization of non-tuberculosis micro bacterium isolates from HIV sero-positive patients attending a rural Hospital and their correlate.

4.Lecture Series on Health:

A guest lecture series was started in the year 2002, wherein eminent doctor were invited to deliver lectures on various health related issues. Dr. B.M. Hegde, Vice Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Health Sciences delivered the first guest lecture in the series on 28th August 2002 on “Role of Alternative Medicine in public Health.” On 1st Feb. 2004, Dr. Urmila Thatte from Bombay conducted the workshop on “Methodology for research in Herbal Medicines” and delivered a public lecture on “Rational Use of Drugs”.

5.Pranayam & Yoga Camps 

One-month workshop on Sanjeevani Pranayam and Yoga was conducted for healthy living like asthma, arthritis, diabetes and hypertension. Total 35 participants benefited from the workshop for specific problems.

6.Self Defense Training Course (Shotokan Karate)

This course was arranged for children in the age group of 7 to 18 years, in October, 2002. The course started with 18 students, all of whom were learning karate under the instructors, Shri Sumit Nagdawane and Ms.Rupali Motghare, at Chitnavis Centre, Civil Lines, 

7. Psycho- Social Support Group

Diagnosis of a terminal disease such as organ failure/H.I.V / late cancers etc. have a devastating effect on the patient as well as the family members. A psychosocial support group was formed, with a panel of experts in various fields such as Doctors, Insurance Agents, Lawyers, Social Workers, and spiritual guides, etc. counselled and helped the patients who were terminally ill.

8.Nursing Attendants Training

The course is specially designed to train men and women between 18-35 years of age, as nursing attendants. The training is for a period of 4 months which includes two months of theory followed by two months of practical training in a reputed hospital in Nagpur. Certificates are given to participants who successfully pass the theory and practical exam.

More than 100 students have been trained out of which a majority have found placement in various hospitals.            

The course covers anatomy, first aid, care of an unconscious patient, CPR, nursing, patient daily care, sterilization techniques, etc.

9.Special Coaching for School Students:

The Trust is conducting special coaching classes for school children, to improve their performance in the SSC examination. Two schools run by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation have been selected by the Trust, namely Pannalal Devadia High School, Gandhibag, Nagpur and Raibahadur Goverdhandas Gopikishanji Rajaramka Agrawal Madhyamik Shala, Sadar. The selected students’ study under guided supervision in a group study environment. They also undergo personality enrichment training to supplement curricular inputs. The coaching places greater emphasis on Mathematics, English and Science. 

10.Workshops on Dyslexia :

A one-day workshop on Dyslexia and learning disabilities was conducted for the primary and middle class schoolteachers. These teachers were trained in identifying problems in dyslexic children and taught the techniques necessary to deal with them. 

Presently half-day workshops are being conducted in schools for pre-primary and primary school teachers to create awareness on learning problems in children. 

11.Jal Jyoti

Jal Jyoti  is a social venture started by students of St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai which aims at lighting underprivileged households specially urban slums, using the simple and effective “Bottled Lights” Or ‘’Solar Water Bulbs’’

Sir Gangadharrao Chitnavis Trust has initiated this project in Nagpur. This magical light can be made available by using nothing but an old plastic bottle filled with water and little bit of bleach, thereby utilizing the good phenomenon of refraction of light. These bottles act as 55 WATT bulbs that can work for almost 3 to 5 years. 

55 bottles have been installed so far in Nagpur slums thereby saving our valuable energy and helped the disadvantaged families to reduce cost of their electricity bills. 

12. BLS -CPR (Cardio- Pulmonary Resuscitation) Workshops:

Basic Life Support workshops are based on the guidelines laid down by the American Heart Association and are conducted regularly on Sundays. The number of participants per workshop is between 15-25. Till date more than 1200 candidates have been trained and certified as CPR volunteers. The list of participants include doctors, paramedical personal, lecturers, students, defense personnel, engineers, businessmen, housewives etc. 

Course content

  1. a) Lectures: 
  • Basic Life Support
  • Obstructed Airway Procedure
  • Special Situations such as drowning, choking, etc.   
  1. b) Workstations: 
  • Hands-on-training on infant, child and adult manikins. 
  • Practical demonstrations of Special situations 

13.Courses run in association with Nagpur Emergency Medical Services Society

About NEMSS

The Nagpur Emergency Medical Services Society (NEMSS) has been established with the objective of setting up Emergency Medical Services in Nagpur. In association with the Nagpur Emergency Medical Service Society (NEMSS), the Trust has organised many training programmes. 

The NEMSS assisted in launching an ambulance service in collaboration with the Nagpur Police, for road accident victims. The Traffic Police ambulance service, which ran from Mar’04 to Nov’04, was staffed by trained personnel provided by the NEMSS and trained as First Responders. The Society also received the assistance of the National Civil Defence College, Nagpur for training of First Responders.

The following training programmes have been conducted to establish a pool of trained personnel for EMS:

First Aid Workshops

First Aid Workshops are regularly organised for students and school teachers. The topics covered includes CPR, fractures, poisoning, choking, care of unconscious patients, sunstroke, animal bites etc.

These workshops are organised as per the requests from various institutions. 

Till Date, number of First Aid Workshops are conducted for school teachers and students, college students and teachers, petrol pump attendants, factory workers, employees in various companies etc. in and around Nagpur.

First Responder Course             

This course has been started with the primary objective of providing training to medical and paramedical staff for pre hospital medical care in emergency situations. The course provides both theoretical and practical knowledge of initial medical response before the patient receives specialized treatment for his condition.          

Students of MBBS, B.A.M.S, B.H.M.S, Interns, Nursing Staff and experienced hospital attendants are eligible for the course. The course consists of 52 hours of theory classes (6 hours a week on Saturday & Sunday) and 4 weeks of practical training in Government & Corporate Hospitals. On completion of the course a Theory and Practical examination is conducted and the successful candidates are awarded certificates. Six batches have been trained so far. 

First Responder training can be organised for a minimum batch of 15 participants.

Ambulance Volunteer course:

This course was specifically designed to equip volunteers with a basic knowledge of First Aid, CPR and patient transportation. The topics covered include:

First Aid basics, Care of Unconscious victim, Emergency Rescue Methods, Transportation, Patient monitoring, Control of Bleeding, CPR, Stretcher Drill, Dressing & Bandaging, Ambulance Drill, Ambulance Equipments, Mock drill.

This was followed by Ambulance Training & Ambulance internship.

About 30 participants have been trained as Ambulance Volunteers. This course has been temporarily discontinued.
